is this a J72 or a J52 or what please?

Found this old negative yesterday. Not the greatest quality but its obviously an 0-6-0ST, but well no it isn't as it has an open cab and is close coupled to a tender, or is that just an illusion caused by the fogging to the right hand side....the number as far as I can make it out is 8685 and for what its worth there is a number 9 chalked on the cabside. According to my 1946 ABC of LNER locomotives there was no such loco in that year, but according to the online brdatabase there was such a loco, originally NER No 1741 and it was a J72. I note it does appear as 8685 in the 1948 abc with a symbol beside it to indicate it weighed more than the other class members. So I deduce this picture is post 1946 renumbering, but my problem is that a Southerner that doesn't look anything like a J72, but does resemble a J52??

Can anyone enlighten me please!

It's a J54 or very similar. Take a look at the locomotive pages in this forum.

Looks to be J57 No 3685 (withdrawn 1938).

Thanks everybody. It seems certain to be No 3865 and the negative is older than I had thought.

Hi all well looks like a J52 but none that I knew early-mid 50s in North London, no condensing pipes or extra domes behind chimney stovepipe or otherwise, that I witnessed & doesn't appear to have an enclosed cab strange? even for Ivatt's earlier 0-6-0 saddle tanks.jj

There is a picture of J57 3685 from the other side in the Green Bible (Fig. 45 in Part 8A), which confirms what Darryl Tooley says.
