Photos to ID Please

Post by Bryan »

These photos were found in amongst some rubbish the other day.
I am trying to identify locations and any other comments.

The Horse drawn carts seem to be a mix of Kings Cross and Liverpool St allocations.

Anyone know anything?

2 final carts.

What does PHY stand for on the rain sheet on cart 6 stand for?

The photo labelled as Marsden Yard seems wrong.
I don't think Marsden was big enough to warrant these facilities.
So where?

What Station is this?

At least two of these photographs have appeared in the GERS's Great Eastern Journal.

No 176 (GEJ 157, p19) is a 1 ton one horse parcel van, standing in front of No 3 gate at Leyton Road.

No 3067 (GEJ 154, p40) is an 8 ton pair horse low lorry of GER origin photographed in 1930. Thorneycroft lorry S230 (registration AN3631) in background.

If I were to take a wild guess, I'd say that the lettering on the rain sheet at the front of No 368 signifies: - for pair horse vehicle/van, Bishopsgate - but this is purely speculation on my part.

3067 was allocated to Marylebone according to the sign writing under the frame.

The italic script is the name and business address of the Company Secretary, James McLaren, rather than the allocation. A similar legend can be seen on the side of E1141, and on most LNER road vehicles photographed around this time.

The "Marsden Leeds" mark is on the end of a (bridge ?) girder. Couldn't it simply be a paint mark indicating where the girder was to be delivered to ?

That is what I was thinking.
Marsden yard at the East end of Standedge tunnel would not have been very big.
With 4 through tracks taking most of the available space.
Unusual yard crane as well.

One suggestion has been Manchester Victoria but not confirmed.
Do you have any better ideas?

Before reading this I also thought Manchester Victoria. There were 5 tracks between platforms 11 and 12 so I think that 'fits' - that would place the train as being in platform 12 (I think).

Bit off radar for the LNER forum!
