Hello George, good to hear from you. This photo shows how the locomotive finished up, having derailed to its left following its collision with an Elswick works industrial loco. Unfortunately the derailment occurred just at the point where the siding spanned coal delivery drops for a works boiler house, which is on the right of the photo, and the loco dropped into the chasm. Had the ground been level and solid at that point I'm sure the collision, which occurred at a fairly moderate speed, would not have had nearly such serious results. The first few vans piled up above and behind the tender. The damage to the right side of the loco (bent connecting rod etc.) was caused by the collision, when the industrial engine became trapped between No. 2115 and the boundary wall on the left before it was pushed through the wall towards the main line - on which No. 2115 and its train would have travelled a few minutes later, had it not run off into the works siding following its crew's 'SPAD' incident at Elswick Works Junction.
A very happy New Year to you.
