Can anyone explain the U & DD letters on this WTT. My friend who is asking the question thinks they might relate to a light engine movement.

In my 1953 reprint of Scottish Region Section W DD was 'Stops only to set down and detach' and U was 'Stops only to take up or attach'.

As I wasn't familiar with either I had a quick glance through the timetable and found the 0530 Class K from Leuchars Junction to St.Andrews had DD for Seggie Siding at 0545 as did the 0905 Class K from Portobello to Musselburgh at Fisherrow Branch Junction at 0945. As the latter was timed past Newhailes Junction at 0910 and it was only 43chains to Fisherrow Junction the train must have been given time to work down the little used (by that time) branch to Fisherrow Harbour which had a level crossing over the tram lines on the main A1 road. Neither of these had a corresponding stop in the other direction so there was no U in either of these tables.

I agree with the reply given. My 1947 LNER WTT for Newcastle District gives an explanation of the terms used in the TT. I note that the same abbreviations were also used in the 1930s.
