A friend of mine is doing some research on the history of GER Y14s/LNER J15s and has the following query that he has been unable to answer anywhere else so I suggested the combined knowledge on this forum may be able to come up with an answer. His query is:
In October 1942 six GER J15s were transferred to Doncaster from East Anglia but not for overhaul. A couple were moved on to Barnsley a week or so later and similarly two went to Mexborough, each staying at their final destinations between two and six months. The other two returned fairly swiftly to March depot. Does anyone have any info on why they were needed in South Yorkshire?
Any help appreciated.
Regards
Steve

According to the ‘Railway Observer’ December 1942 p174 – LNER Engine Transfers October/November 1942 -
“New England has lost seven J15’s: 7808/15/36 (MEX) (later corrected to 7508/15/7836); 7843/50 (BRN); 7854, 7931 (MAR) and has received J3’s in exchange – 4126/60 (BRN);
4109/25/73 (MEX).”
(BRN – Barnsley; MEX – Mexborough; MAR – March.)
I have not yet found any J15's transferred to Doncaster.
7850 was subsequently transferred from BRN to MAR - as recorded in April 1943 issue – probably Feb/March 1943.
There is no reason quoted for these transfers/exchanges of locomotives.
It should be said, however, that at this time during the war loco transfers were many and varied within companies/regions and also inter company. – eg ten SR N15 King Arthur 4-6-0’s on loan to Heaton on the LNER in 1942; two SR B4 4-4-0 nos 2051/68 on loan to LNER at Neville Hill in 1941.

Details will I think be found by looking through the records in Yeadon Volume 35, although RCTS 'greenie' Part 5 does not mention these transfers under the 'Allocation' section.

E.G. Yeadon p74 has 7515 (later 5434) leaving P'boro' New England for Doncaster on 17/10/42 then Mexboro' 24/10/42 before returning to Stratford 2/6/43.
