Hi all,
I was wondering what the general LNER practice for gunpowder wagons was?
Did they move in separate trains or just as part of the general goods service?

Thanks alot

Here's what the LNER Rule Book of 1933 has to say:-

'Not more than five vehicles containing explosives must be conveyed by any one train at any one time. Vehicles containing explosives or highly inflammable liquids or tank wagons containing compressed liquefied gases must be marshalled as near the middle of the train as possible. Vehicles containing explosives and tank wagons containing compressed liquefied gases must not be placed on the train near to vehicles containing inflammable liquids or other traffic of an inflammable nature.'

WW2 would clearly have seen a change in operating practices.

Can anyone confirm the colour they were painted in in NER and LNER days? Dapol offer 'NE' variants in both red and grey but don't know which is accurate for which era

Peter Tatlow doesn't mention any variation so I'm sure they'd be grey. Those he illustrates certainly look grey. I'm not aware of any fitted ones.

There is a picture of a single GPV alongside the loading dock at Shincliffe. The comments above about marshalling in general goods traffic are very useful regarding how it might have been worked to/from there. Thanks.

Which Armaments Depots / Gunpowder works did these wagons operate from and too?

Would they ever visit the other side of the hill and work out of Gathurst on the Wigan - Southport L+Y line?
