LNER/BR Modifications to NER whistle arrangement

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a question i'm struggling to find the answer for. I am a railway modeller in O guage and my chosen period is around 1950. I currently have five NER loco's on my workbench, three of which ( a G5, J25 and a J73 ) all have a box mounted behind the whislte and attached to the cab front. All the research I've carried out seems to point towards this being fitted when whistles were moved from the cab roof and boiler mounted and Ross Pop safety valves were left uncovered. I've taken these pictures today of 65033 at Shildon and unfortunately there is just an empty box. Can anyone tell me what fittings were inside or what valve arrangement was on top of the bolier face plate? Or even better a photo showing the details ? Many NER classes were so fitted so any would help as I assume all would be similar,

Does this answer the question ? Its a photo by Arthur k of a NE Worsdell 060 cab, saved as part of my reference material for a J25. Can i find the original thread- no!!! RM web I think. Have also found an exworks photo of 68361 in shiny black ca 1955 which indicates,in the shadows a similar box on its cab front.

Found the webpage ! http://www.rmweb.co.uk/forum/viewtopic. ... &start=250 > RM web (Photos from the 1960s, NE area , page 11,) about halfway down the page, with other photos of the cab. Thanks so much, Arthur, for having the foresight to take and amass this tremendous source of info,we are indebted to you.

Ten ten,

That's absolutley fantastic :D Exactly what i'm looking for thankyou and it answers a lot of other questions about cab interior fittings on these locos so another thankyou for that. And final thanks to Arthur, I totally agree with your comments as without his foresight what would we have done. I would be interested to see the picture of 68361 as one of my current projects is 68363, I started a workbench here a while ago but haven't posted in some time. I should really post on it again soon.

Many thanks Mick
