Good morning alAtlantic's production of Clerestory GNR roofs and DMR's production of NER clerestorys has got me thinking about wheels.
When did railway companies stop using Mansell wheels?
I'm guessing it was prior to WWI, but have no evidence.

They were gradually phased out mainly prior to WW2, but there were a few notable examples which retained them right into preservation viz ex ECJS Royal Saloons 395 and 396. According to the late David Jenkinson, HRH The Queen Mother swore that the ride in her saloon was so much superior to that of modern stock because of the Mansell wheels that the saloons were retained for so long. The deciding factor eventually being the higher speeds required - their last outing was, I think, the investiture of the Prince of Wales.

Thanks a lot Silverfox, they lasted a lot longer than I thought.
So the "cut and shut" NER/GCR clerestory conversions that I'm building should have Mansell wheels.
When I replace the Hornby Mk1 bogies with the Fox type, I shall fit Mansell wheels.

According to documents I've read, the NER used Kitson cushion tyres on all coaching stock between 1894 and 1922. Not sure when or if these would have been replaced.

There is some discussion here.

I know I've read more about them somewhere, but can't quite remember just where. I think the NER painted them black though!

There is a drawing listed in the Darlington series, 492B of 1892 - Arrangement of bogie truck, dining saloons, which mentions the use of Ritsons patent wood centred wheels, I'm wondering if this is a typo by the NRM and should read Kitson ?.

I found very little on Kitson wheels, and what I did find says they are very similiar to Mansell wheels.
Even if they were painted brown like Mansell wheels, they would soon become black, as would the Mansell wheels.
However, it's amazing what facts surface on this forum. Twelve hours ago, I had never heard of Kitsons wheels.
