2512 'Silver Fox'

Evening Gents.

I realise that when 2512 was built, her boiler bands were stainless steel, unlike her three sisters.

My question is, when she was repainted into Garter Blue, were the bands kept as visible stainless steel or were they painted over? I've found one photo which seems to suggest they are stainless steel still, but being Black and White, it's hard to tell.

Thanks

Im pretty sure I have seen a photo of her in garter blue with stainless boiler bands in a book i have. rails of shefield have an o gauge model of her in this condition for sale on ebay. Obviously this is not proof she ever was painted like that but it certaiinly looks smart

I too have seen the photo on ebay, but as you say it's not proof.
I'm hoping she did, as it's going to make a very nice model, and that bit different from the other Garter Blue A4s. :)

There is sufficient evidence to satisfy me that she retained her stainless steel boiler bands and other fittings up until the wartime liveries came in. They were not perpetuated after the war.

The attached cigarette card is puzzling since it shows blue livery but no cast nameplate?

Several A4s did run without names for a little while after shopping when built (and apparently when repainted too). I am not sure if 2512 is one of them, but there is a photograph of 4495 in East Coast Pacifics at Work showing this precedent.

However - to the right of that photograph is a shot of Silver Fox in blue leaving King's Cross, and the boiler bands look much brighter and more prominent than those of the A4 next to it. Perhaps an indication it retained the boiler bands?

Thank you gents.
The other photo which seems to suggest rather shiny boiler bands, is Fig 119 in RCTS 2A (dated about 1938 which is useful).

I think that is enough evidence.
I'm awaiting the donor loco to arrive (which is a Christmas present) so a transformation into 2512 shall take place between Christmas and New Year.

Just had a look through my a4 books. Cant find the photo of silver fox but have found a colour photo of silver king in garter blue, full valances and with a red backed name. There was a lot more variety than you would at first think with blue a4's

I've just done a search for the book through amazon, and abe books...and the prices coming up are £82 upwards!!!!!

Paul, I would be very interested to see the colour photo of Silver King (and any other A4s in colour from the LNER period) and at those prices, I doubt I will be buying the book. If you scan the photo and send it as a personal message, I wouldn't think you infringing copyright, as you aren't making it public.

It would be out of copyright by now anyway!

Re the cigarette card

When 2512came out, it like the other three silvr engines, did not have nameplates but the nam was painted on the cladding side. in 2512 case above the fox. I am pretty sure that whist still in silver a cast plate was affixed to the loco, and therefore when in blue would have had the plate.
Will have to look at the green book to see if anything is in there that may help

I've checked the Green Book, regarding Bands being stainless steel in Garter Blue, but after the comments in this thread, I'm happy to go a long with above.
