Brake van livery

I am building the BH Entrerprises N gauge GNR brake van kit. The instructions say these were bauxite in GNR days but gray in LNER service. Can this be correct? I thought all LNER brake vans were bauxite.
Thanks.

All bauxite ; both fitted and unfitted. The only give away was the vac pipe brake standard - black for AVB.

Was it officially "brown red oxide" prior to 1937, with paint or description changed to bauxite only after that date?

Samantics I think Graeme. Bauxite roughly came into use with the factory prepared finishes whereas prior to 37/38 paints were mixed in situ at the works and could vary depending on a number of factors which I think I have rehearsed here before (but quite willing to do so again!).
