Hi everyone,
I've just joined this forum, I recently purchased a white metal kit built J72 model that requires the paintwork finishing.
Could someone please help by telling me what shade of LNER green they were painted in ? Darlington, Doncaster or BR Apple Green ? I take it J72's were only either green or black, if black were they lined or plain?

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi
I'll try to cover briefly what's written in the RCTS book part 8B locomotives of the LNER.

J72's up to 1928 where basically black with red lining, after this they were plain black up to and through the war years with two exceptions...in 1937 engines 2313 and 1720 were given the full red lining livery as there were in the public eye on empty shunting duties at Newcastle Central station, they returned to plain black in 1940. In 1947 engine 8680 (ex 1720) was painted in full LNER green with traditional black and white lining although the letters and numbers were hand painted and unshaded in Gills sans characters.
In 1949 the same loco appeared again in LNER green but with the BR emblem in place of LNER and numbered 68680, in 1952 this engine returned to black livery but with the BR red, cream and grey lining. In 1957 the emblem changed to the lion holding the wheel and in 1959 she returned to black with no lining.

Two engines 68723 and 68736 were painted in the original NER green lined livery during general repairs at Darlington May 1960 but with BR numbers in the customary place on the tank sides, ahead of the numbers was the latest BR emblem and at the end of the number was the NER coat of arms. Pictures of these loco's are in the RCTS book mentioned above.

regards

Pete

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the info, it will come in handy when I start the project. I had a look at the RCTS website I'm very tempted to join that group.
