It is well-known that in the late 1950's the LMR painted its Stanier Pacifics in a BR-ised LMS livery, and that the Liverpool Street J69, and one each of the York and Newcastle J72 pilots acquired GE and NE liveries, respectively. In addition, the NE electric locos received NE livery, and some SR USA's received Malachite(?) green.

I have long wondered whether consideration was given to painting the Kings Cross A4's in Garter Blue. Can anyone shed any light on this? (I believe that the A4's were known to the crews as "Blue 'un's" to the very end!)

I too have often wondered the very same thing particularly since I was "wound up" by a fellow spotter one July day** in 1963 at Durham who swore that BR were then repainting 60019 in blue at Gateshead shed.
(Not sure if you saw the piece in Steam Railway mag recently on this very subject with a photo of preserved 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley in Garter Blue, tweaked to appear as 60007 with later BR emblem? and very attractive it was too)
PS** the main memory of this day was looking down on the viaduct from the little castle in Warton Park and catching Gannet and Falcon passing one another albeit rather scruffy by then. Happy Days
