What was the change over from a single chimmy to double and did any keep there origanal single chimmys

All the details you require are to be found in Yeadon's volume two - Gresley A4 and W1 classes. Either that, or some soul will be kind enough to type out the info for you

Of the thirty four A4's that survived the second world war four already had double chimneys fitted (from new) the rest were converted as they went through works between 1957/8.

If you really want to know the history you should get hold of a copy of 'Top Shed' by Peter Townend. He was instrumental in persuading Doncaster to convert the A4's and ultimately the A3s and V2s, and his account makes good reading, with drawings of both arrangements. More of the story is told in his book on the East Coast Pacifics. The double Kylchap was Gresley's legacy to the LNER pacifics. Chapelon convinced him that the fitting would transform the A4s and Mallard and it's record were the result. Following that he left an instruction that future pacifics should be so fitted and Thompson's pacifics reaped the reward. They might have been much less well received if they had had single chimney's, as was found later with the Peppercorn A2s.
