Not sure if this is right place to ask this question but maybe...... I have just brush painted an A4 loco using Humbrol acrylic RC408 Apple Green from their Railway range, and whilst the coverage is good the finish is very dull, certainly compared with other factory made Apple Green LNER locos. Is there a way I could give the finish a 'lift' such as using eg a type of semi-gloss model varnish or matt clear lacquer to get the desired effect as, to the best of my knowledge, these locos in the 'Big 4' era would have been maintained in a more or less pristine condition, rather than being allowed to weather as they were later in their (BR) lives before being withdrawn.
Any recommendations would be very much appreciated. Many thanks

Re: Painting models
I spray with Vallejo Gloss varnish to seal the paint , it also shows any defects which can then be rubbed flat with very fine wet and dry. I then seal with Games Workshop Satin varnish. Both paints are in aerosols. See my thread for the results.
Re: Painting models
Humbrol Clear or Johnson's Klear. Both the same thing.

Re: Painting models
Graeme,
After years of swearing at spray cans of varnish that kept stopping working midway through using and thus spoiling my painting I took the decision to buy an airbrush. This has completely transformed my model painting, so much easier to use and far cheaper on paint. regarding varnish I use Ronseal Ultra Tough Hardglaze which is available in Matt, Satin & Gloss and only needs thinning with white spirit. Best to leave for 24 hours after spraying but super finish and the spray gun can be cleaned with white spirit which is much cheaper than these very over rated cleaners.
