"Missing" B 17 locomotives

Post by Belvoir »

I seem to remember that there were two B17 I never "copped".
A quick glance at a borrowed copy of 1955 Combined seems to prove this - there were only 70 listed.
Can some kind person look up what happened to 2804 / 61604 and 2828 / 61628 ?

Many thanks in anticipation.

61604(Elveden) was my first Sandringham cop in early 1953 on a York to Doncaster goods train through Selby. On a visit to Doncaster centenary in June,I think,of that year low and behold I saw it in the scrap yard-much to my disappointment.

2804 (61604) to Doncaster Works 20.8.53- condemned 24.8.53 and scrapped at Doncaster.

2828 (61628) to Doncaster Works 3/9/53 - condemned 15.9.52 and scrapped at Doncaster.

At that stage scrapping may have involved dismantling as the boilers could have been re-used.

Thank you both very much.

50C, you must be even older than me !! Damned good memory though . . .

Saint Johnstoun, I assume they both needed far too much work to repair.

The arrival of the B1s and then the Britannias on the GE section eventually resulted in a surplus of motive power, plus of course the eventual electrification of lines out of Liverpool Street meant that the B17s on the GE were early casualties, going back in time the success of the V2s meant no more were built, and for some reason the powers that be decided that this class would be an early candidate for elimination. The transfer of the GC to the LM Region may also have had an ultimate effect.
