Gresley A1 Works plate position

Post by Tom F »

Hello

As has been mentioned in my workbench thread, I'm working on Gresley A1s. Doncaster appeared to fit the works plates on the smokebox sides. Would I be right in thinking that North British fitted them elsewhere?

Thanks Mick.
Found this photo, which is on the cover of Volume 1 of Yeadon Register.

I think I can just make out the worksplate, Being a Black NB plate it makes sense it's hard to see.

I think as Mick says it's going to rely on photographs. Only found one which is the first one I posted in this thread of 2569, and it isn't clear.

So if the plate is on the smokebox, will it be the NB type plate (Black). On some photos it almost looks like there are four sets of plates, 2 on the centre splashers and 2 on the smokebox sides.

Cheers

The NBL locos were delivered with a round Hyde Park works plate on the smokebox side. They also had, before the livery changes post 1928 a small oval LNER ownership plate on the cab side. After 1928 the owner ship plate was moved to the middle splasher and the works plate lost.

Thanks Bill, that tells me what I needed to know. Much appreciated.

Apologies for resurrecting a very old thread but does anyone know where I can source a 4mm scale LNER ownership plate as found on the NB built A3s? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply Dave. However, what I am after is the LNER owners plate. I was thinking I could use a NB worksplates but they are a rhombus shape. The owners plate is an oval with a black background. Cheers.

Emailed Brian but no joy - they only do the works plates.

They are great at 247 though, and they are currently sorting me out with a smokebox number plate which required new etching.

Operator error I meant the LNER plates, as I have some from 247 & the NB ones as well, they are good.

Thanks JW I did not know Gary had stopped and passed the business on.
