Great Northern eight wheel brake vans
Hello everyone
Somewhere my memory tells me there was a ex-GNR 8 wheel brake van used on heavy coal trains south towards London.
I have never seen drawings of such an interesting vehicle.
Is this another vehicle that I need to buy Tatlow's LNER wagons for?
I have bought nine railway books in last few weeks, seven of them were recommended by this forum, and am trying to resist buying the first two volumes of Tatlow's LNER wagons.
I'd be interested to know any details of the van and its undercarriage.
How did the van get round corners, which axles pivoted?

(I must be in love with the bizarre)

You could always go to the Tanfield railway where they have one and see it in the flesh.

Evenin' all
Thanks Tresol, but I don't think the exchequer would run to a 600 mile round trip to see a wagon. It's good that such a wagon is preserved, and I shall look for details of the Tanfield line.

Its a good model, JW, and as I suspected, the details are from Tatlow. It looks like I shall end up buying vols 1 & 2 of LNER wagons.

Good morning all
I have a big weakness for books on all subjects. My first ever prize at school was a copy of "The Modern World Book of Railways", which is what made me a LNER fan. Who couldn't be inpressed by a picture of an A4 (and P2) at the age of 6/7?
The set of Great Northern locomotives that JC recommended haven't made a bookcase yet, being permanently on the coffee table, as they are great for dipping into (a horrible pun).
I like the NER as well as the GNR & GCR, so I might as well buy Vols 1 & 2 of Tatlows work, and save on postage.
I must get out walking early today, before the sun is too high and get back in case the postman calls with some bit and pieces that I'm waiting for.

Afternoon all
Volume 1 of Tatlow's LNER wagons arrived today and there are so many wonderful wagons (what a Peco pun), that I will have to build some.
I'll have to ignore the screams of the exchequer and order some bits and pieces, better still I'll wait till volume 2 arrived as it's bound to include more must-haves.

Good morning all
Volumes 1 & 2 of Tatlow's LNEr wagons are being read cover to cover at the moment. I am constructing a GNR 8w brake, GCR 6w brake, GCR cattle wagon, GER cattle wagon, and just starting a NER 6w brake. I'm having problems with my computer at the moment and will post some pics of them when it gets sorted out.
I have spotted a breakdown brake in Tatlow that was a GCR bogie brake for the Woodhead line.
Does anyone know of any plans/pics of this monster? If not I'll have to estimate the dimensions from Tatlow's notes etc.

I think my learned colleague Mr King may have one of these and can probably direct you to the source of his information.
