Agreed, but an excruciating read. Written by someone in their twenties, no doubt. Not his fault, I know, but you'd think someone could clue him in on idiom.

Excellent articles in this months Heritage Railway on the gathering and other A4 articles and a streamlined A1/A3 proposal (one for Graeme!!).

They advertised this article, first with a semi streamlined duchess, and then followed it up with a semi streamlined A1/1, leading those along the way to thinking that they were the subject locomotives! Pretty poor advertising if you ask me

It was a poor article. I had hoped for something new on the real proposals for streamlining which started with the first A4 ideas and didn't finish until BR killed off the Peppercorn A1 streamlining post-war. I have assembled a number of drawings into a word file and post them for those folks who may not have seen the proposals before.

That's an interesting insight - I like the poppet valve A3

Same old designs other than the W1 variation.


I liked the sketch of the A1 streamliner ,rear facing boiler and streamliner Tender ahead of the Cab which I had never seen before

I visited the NRM yesterday. Photos are in this set - not all are A4s:

When I arrived around midday there was a huge queue to get in so I went back around 2.00 pm and had to queue for 20 minutes. Photography was difficult due to the number of people but became better later in the afternoon. 60007/8/9 were easiest to photograph and were also in the best light.

Thanks for the lovely photos Kestrel and others . I went last tues. very hot and busy. One thing I noticed which no one seems to have mentioned : the green colour of No.8 and 9 . It's not quite right to my eyes,rather like the Hornby green.Maybe they specified the mix! Some of us remember them,indeed worked on them,like myself,and it is not the "brunswick"green that I remember.

I don't remember Brunswick green as I'm too young but I wondered if 8 and 9 might be a bit bright. However, colours change due to fading, weathering etc, and some colours go darker over time not lighter, so it's hard to tell for sure unless you have a colour sample of the specification that BR used. 8 and 9 were also in bright sunshine when I took my photos.

Which green? My immediate impression was that the two locos were painted in entirely different shades.

I don't pretend to know that much about liveries and maybe it's the natural daylight shining on no.60008 but the B.R. livery she wears looks a bit to light to me almost like a Pea green rather then the slightly darker green that is seen on archive video film footage and colour photographs from the B.R. era?.

I guess this is only to be expected now days when locos are being painted and re-painted in different liveries every couple of years that people can't quite replicate certain liveries from the past correctly?.
