A4 Tenders

I know that 60024 and 60034 swapped tenders only a week or so before 60024 was withdrawn in early sep 1966. I believe this was done at Perth as I have seen photos of the two there both minus tenders in late Aug 1966.
However, I recall visiting ferryhill in summer 1966, and saw 60004 (withdrawn) minus its tender; anyone know where it went, and what tender was fitted to 60004 to see it to the scrapyard?

Regarding 60024 and 34; I visited 63A on 28.8.66. I photographed 60034 without its tender; it had very shiny wheel treads so the removal had only just taken place. I also photographed 60024 in steam and with tender. I recollect that, curiously, I didn't see a spare A4 tender, but behind the cab end of 60034 was an NBL diesel shunter and behind that an unattached Black Five tender, so maybe Perth did a fair bit of tender swapping. Both the A4s were 61B engines at the time and both were withdrawn, as you say, in 9/66. Also there was 60026 (which 'What Happened To Steam' shows as withdrawn in 12/65 and stored at 61B 'til 12/66 !). While 60024/34 were both very clean, 60026 appears in the background of another photo and both loco and tender were uniformly dirty, ruling this one out as being involved in tender swaps.

60004 went to Motherwell for scrap without a tender. It was noted in holding sidings there in December, according to a contemporary R.O., with a covered van in its place!

60004 lost its tender to 60009 after withdrawal as the tender 60009 had in 1966 was acquired as the second tender for 4472.

Many thanks to Andy W; this was the missing information I have been trying to source for a while! It explains why in none of the various texts is a mention of the tender which was attahced to 60004 to get it to the scrapman. Good for 61B's mechanical staff for some innovative thinking; now has anyone a photo of 60004 with it's unusual "tender"?

Did 34s corridor tender go to Flying Scotsman when 4472 was preserved?

I gleaned this information from the "The Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Preservation Trust Ltd" website and from the archives of their "Chime Magazine" article "A tangle of Tenders" by Merl Haigh, . It is the copywright of "The Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Preservation Trust Ltd" and I trust they will not be upset by me cribbing a couple of their paragraphs.

Tender Nº5484 – 1928 Corridor Type
This was a "one off" specially built in 1929 to be attached to the High Pressure "Hush-Hush" Locomotive Nº10000. There were detail differences from the normal tenders of this type, the main one being the side sheets at the front end were not carried round as far as previously, and the hand rails were stainless steel. The rear Buffer Beam had several holes drilled through it, to allow the cables from the test instruments to pass through to the Dynamometer Car.
However Class A4 WILLIAM WHITELAW is recorded as receiving its proper B.R. number 60004 and changing its tender for tender Nº5484 during a visit to Doncaster Works 24-25/5/ 1948. The tender remained with Nº60004 until withdrawal on 17/7/1966. Again the tender did not go for scrap but was transferred to Class A4 Nº60009 UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA (it having lost its tender Nº5332 to FLYING SCOTSMAN) 17/6/1966 into preservation 10/9/1966.

Tender Nº5332 – 1928 Corridor Type
A4 60033 SEAGULL 29/12/1962**
**Locomotive withdrawn. The tender was retained at Doncaster Works, and was attached to Class A4 Nº60009 UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA (in for a General Overhaul 16/7/1963 to 6/11/1963), 6/11/1963 to withdrawal 1/6/1966, when the Tender was not scrapped but was purchased by Alan Pegler and converted into the water carrying second tender for the preserved Class A3 FLYING SCOTSMAN.
Tender Nº5325 - 1928 Corridor Type.

A4 60034 LORD FARRINGDON 14/1/1963****
****to withdrawal, then transferred to Class A3 Nº60103 (4472) for preservation. Still with FLYING SCOTSMAN but has been extensively re-built in recent years.

Regards, Derek.

Thank you for that Derek, I thought I had read that somewhere.

I'm sure somewhere I've read that 60024 received a non-corridor tender right near the end of its life from one of the withdrawn non-corridor A4's that was transferred to Scotland. I think it was undertaken at Perth does anyone know if this is true?

Yes, absolutely correct. 60024 swapped its corridor tender (#5329) with the non corridor tender from withdrawn 60034 (#5640) around 24/8/66 at Perth shed, and continued working with the non corridor variant until official withdrawal in mid Sep at Ferryhill.
