Coach destination boards - small

Post by 1H was 2E »

Does anyone have info' about the smaller boards mounted towards the ends of coaches? Back in the '60s a friend gave me a small number of boards with place names painted on them. I thought that they were just ones used as train indicators on stations and not very interesting, and in house moves etc all but one have been lost. I've recently re-discovered the survivor, and realised it's more interesting than I first thought. It's 32 1/2" long, 3 1/2" high and about 3/8" thick, wood with metal re-enforcing at the ends. The background colour is French grey, or dirty white. The lettering is black; one side says "SHIREBROOK NORTH" and the other "CHESTERFIELD M P". I had originally thought it was used in a workers bus to a Motive Power (depot) so rather boring but it has occurred to me that there is no Chesterfield MPD and it might be Market Place and the board was to be placed on coaches. Does anyone know if this guess is correct? Was there a Shirebrook - Chesterfield Market Place service, and when would the board date from? The lost ones were crimson with gold lettering and were from the Mansfield area, though I can't remember whether they were GC, GN or MR places. If only I could work out how to attach a photo.......

I think Market Place is probably correct.

The LD&EC service survived from Mansfield/Shirebrook to Chesterfield and also Sheffield for many years. GCR and MR were the origin.
