I'm involved with the restoration of the above coach, the pictorial "progress" of which can be found at http://www.gotopcs.net. In Michael Harris's book, the number of this coach is a bit of a mystery (to me at least). He has it listed on P135 (1924 built) and 10021 and 12041 are mentioned, but there is also a number in the 1000-1011 range listed. We think the original coach number might have been 1007 but we are not sure. I have also found 4644 stamped inside the hit-and-miss door ventilators.
The SRPS bought it in 1971 numbered DE1008, previously SC12041E. Maker's plate says York 1924.

Anybody any clues ???

'Bishop' volume 1 lists it as built as 10021J in 9/24, renumbered to 1002 in 5/26, renumbered to 4464 in 12/30, renumbered to 12041 after 1943. Allocated to ScR stock after nationalisation and condemned in 1/60. Converted to DE 320874 in 7/61 and preserved in 2/71.

It is also listed as being allocated to Flying Scotsman set 1 in 1928.

I would suggest that the door stamped 4464 is from another coach. Were there any numbers inside the blind covers as that is another place to look for numbers.

Many thanks for the info. Alles klar as they say. Unfortunately, there are no blind covers! They were all ripped out by dear BR during the coach's departmental phase. I only found the number 4464 twice - all the other hit-and-miss sliders so far (5 out of 12) came up blank.
I will quote your data on my website if I may (with credit)?

Thanks again
Don

I can add from a copy of the official Doncaster DO list of renumberings that the renumbering of 4464 to 12041 to Diagram 23 is confirmed. This ties in with Harris as originall 10021J and 1002 in ECJ service.

For crediting, the full title of 'Bishop' is 'London North Eastern Railway passenger train vehicles - a monograph on the details and history from 1924 until 1979 by C.J.G Bishop. Volume One - Corridor Thirds' (privately published - 2001)
