I was there with Sawdust and can report the the dynamometer car was not as badly damaged as was made out in some of the more hysterical press. Some small areas of exerior scumbling to be redone (but probably already had been done since first restored as the quality of work wasn't as good as the main body panels) and some ceiling repainted as well. The most likely solution to prevent a recurrence is the manufacture of a fitted cover for the coach, to be used if it ever has to be moved outside the Great Hall.

We also had the opportunity to go inside one of the LNER Royal Saloons for a closer look, truly a rather special day!

I wouldn't have said so. A large amount of the problems that will need attention are more down to the age of the material finishes rather than directly damaged by water. Remember this vehicle probably hadn't been touched since it was restored to go into Clapham in the 60's. Nobody complains that Mallard has been repainted since then.

When I traced and photographed these details in 1997 for use of the signwriter on the GN saloon on the Bluebell, I was specially warned by the NRM not to damage the patina as it hadn't been touched since 1929, this not right then, Mike - assuming we're talking about the same vehicle? Also, some years on, was shown inside and sat in the chairs etc and looked at the notebooks, which I think were c 1952. The lavatory far superior to that on GN saloon 43909

Funnily enough Mike, your name did come up in conversation. I take it you won't mind if we pass on your contact details?

While I could see some panels being grained that long ago. The lettered panels are far more recent. Firstly because only some of the numbers and LNER are transfers with the rest being painted and secondly they should be gold leaf rather than cream.
