I have just noticed this photograph on Flickr:-

The first two vehicles behind the V2 are articulated but seem to have blanked out windows. Is this just the angle of the glass and a trick of the light (because the door windows look ok), or have they been converted for parcels use?

A version of blackout measures? I presume the loco is in wartime filth livery.

These are two of the steel panelled twins which were made up into a set as BTK+TK; CK: TK+BTK. They would appear like that in the wrong kind of light. Five car sets were made for both GN and GC sections but used indiscriminately after WW2. These were the prototypes on which the Honby Dublo tin printed stock were based;
artic prewar and unartic after.

Silver Fox has identified these coaches correctly. You are viewing them from the corridor side. The ‘blacked out’ windows are in fact the door ‘droplight’ windows. Two on the brake and three in the full third. They are of course recessed compared to the other corridor side windows which are fixed and flush. Note the same effect on the droplight in the guard’s door.

If you read my initial post again carefully, you will see that I mentioned blanked out windows, not blacked out ones.

I was referring to the large corridor side windows which appear to be blanked out when compared to the door windows, and indeed to the windows on the coaches behind.

I agree with you Blackout, and not only does the V2 not have a smokebox number plate, but the signal box has lost its Kings Cross nameboard.

Trick of the light. I've never heard of any of these being converted to any other use (and the likelihood is that if they were they wouldn't be in a passenger consist) and I'm sure Nick would know if any had been.

The glazing is almost flush and the light has obscured it. The second coach does show picture windows if you look carefully. Guards and door droplights are recessed and so the shadows show them up.

If you look really hard at the first coach, the windows do appear.... followed by leaping dolphins.....

Do i detect black out curtains in the box, No signalbox name surely this dates pic to circa 1940.

Circa 1940? What colour would those coaches be, then?

The V2 has the later style valve spindle guides, could that help date the picture?

I personally can't see any blackout curtains...anywhere. Where should I be looking?

That seems more likely to me. Perhaps this is an early BR shot, and the V2 in question is still holding onto its LNER livery under the grime? Stranger things happened in 1948/49/50

Aren't they tourist stock? That's what they look like to me.
