Old photo I found of one of the two(?) P1s built.

Yes there were sadly only 2 - 2393 & 2394. Would have been something to see.

EDIT: In the photo of 2394, what's the pipe running down the side of the trailing truck and the contraption on it's end?

I think you will find that the large pipe is a steam pipe to the booster.

There's also a Westo pump on the boiler side, the P1s being dual fitted originally.

Have to confess, that's the first time I've ever seen a photo of a P1. Impressive.

Now, any guesses at location? Looks like a trough on the adjacent line. I'm fairly certain it's not Langley, so where?

The P1s were not dual fitted - the Westinghouse Pump was to provide air for engaging and disengaging the booster. The pumps were removed at the same time as the boosters were removed.

Ive added another file with two more drawings showing later modifications to the two locos.

As I may have mentioned before, you do no have to restrict yourself to just a photo.

There is a film clip of the first P1 at the S&D centenary in 1925.

The clip can be found on the John Huntley video "Trains From The Arc". Originally this was covered in video volume 3, but all three volumes have now been combined into one DVD.

The Huntley commentary is incorrect in describing the loco as a pacific as it passes the camera, but it is most definitely the P1, and as an added bonus the Garratt is recorded in the cavalcade as well as many other excellent locomotives.

Yes, I think that the film also appears on one of John Huntley's other videos. In my childhood we had a 9.5mm silent projector and one of the films was a Pathe Newsreel of the 1925 S&D Centenary Parade. I could never understand why I never saw an 'unnamed' Pacific with a wee tender at the time for real, not realising of course that the loco was a Mikado! And of course the loco didn't appear in any of the Ian Allan ABCs I had in the early 1950s.

Incidentally, Locomotion was propelled by a petrol engine in the tender, which was a replica; the original tender stayed at Darlington works for the duration. There is one shot I have seen where one can clearly see the 'fireman' operate something which obviously had something to do with the propelling machinery. How they stopped the thing is subject to speculation?
