GNR - originally full lined green livery, then from 1914 unlined grey, and then Black - lined red originally, and later unlined in LNER days and unlined black in BR days.

G'Day Gents

A small correction, in BR days the J1 wore BR mixed traffic.............same as the V2's  and with 5'8" wheels had a surprising turn of speed, J1's were often based at Hitchin, and have on occasion taken over from Pacifics, and hauled 14 coach trains into the Cross.

Funny - I don't recollect ever seeing a photo of a J1 in lined black?

On a practical point, where they ever clean enough by then for any lining to show?

Thanks, I've been requested to do the liveries for someone's J1 pixel art / sprite. It's horribly out of proportion but the guy's letting me correct the boiler and axleboxes.

There is a picture of a lined out J1 in P.N. Townsend's book 'East Coast Pacifics at Work' page 8.

65015 at what looks like Doncaster works, late 40's early 50's.

I can PM you the pic if you don't have a copy of the book.

You are getting your J1s and J2s mixed up - I suggest that you all go to the Encyclopedia part of this Forum and have a check. The picture in the Townend book is of a J2.

J1s were saturated, J2s superheated.

So it is St J, my apologies, but I still stand by my statement that the J1's were lined in BR mixed traffic, I'll keep looking for a picture of a J1.
