What happened to 4489's CP chime whistle?

Post by owd sweedy »

Does anyone know what happened to the Canadian Pacific chime whistle that was fitted to 4489? I know it was removed (1940's?) and ended up in Wales(?), though not sure when. Does anyone have the dates of removal (and the reason why), and of disappearance ? In my researches over here, I have heard that it was actually a 7 chime whistle and that it was specially made in the CP's Angus shops, in Montreal, just for 4489. I still haven't found documentary evidence for this yet, but research continues.

Cheers,
Owd Sweedy.

I was reading the Railway Magazine on just this subject this week. The whistle ended up at the Festiniog (there was a picture of Bill Hoole holding it) form where it was stolen in IIRC 1969 and has never been seen again.

...and probably won't be until whoever's (still) got it passes away.

Ay up!

It is just possible that it may never resurface. There is a good chance it was stolen for scrap.
If I ain't here, I'm in Bilston, scoffing decent chips at last!!!!
