Well, it is presented verbatim from a 1930's publication(s) under no illusions or claims to be recently written. Kind of neat, don't you think.

I always like finding fun sites like that one. I like the way they describe how the smoke deflectors work.

Prior to that, I didn't think much consideration went into how the deflectors were designed. My favorite locomotives (usually) with deflectors would be the original Royal Scot and non-streamlined Coronation classes of LMS heritage.

Gotta admit to liking original Royal Scots myself. That big fat boiler and stub chimney gave them a pretty meaty and powerful look.

I always thought that the deflectors made the Fowler Scots look better proportioned and seemed to slim down the smokebox, as opposed to the Duchesses whose front end seemed to expand into them.

Fascinating stuff that certainly was "cutting edge" when written.

9Fs and Brits look nude without them. Wonder what a deflectorless Clan would look like?
