B1 - Unlined BR Black

Post by rockvilla-4 »

Hi Folks

Just a quick question, did any B1's ever carry unlined BR Black in the 60's?

Cant quite stretch to the asking price for the Hornby BR models, but the LNER Black ones are within reach!

Thanks in advance

I can find no evidence of unlined black being applied to B1s in the 1960s. It would seem that all carried lined black, usually obscured by layers of dirt, until the end.

If money is a problem, scout ebay for one or attend a local model railway exhibition. Locos on trade stands are often quite a bit cheaper than the RRP :)

EDIT: There's a lined black B1 on ebay now on a buy it now price of £101

Must it be a Hornby one?

There is a weathered Bachmann one here for £67 + £5 p&p

(I am not the seller - I hasten to add).

Hi Folks

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

I'd scoured what must be hundred of photos on line and in books & mags with no results so thought a post on here would confirm the situation! I did think about buying a black LNER one and weathering it very heavily to hide the lining but I'd still know it was LNER!

I compared the Bachmann and Hornby B1's and I do prefer the Hornby model, I'm going to the Perth exhibition next weekend so I'll have a scour to see if I can pick one up at a good price! Im not in any rush to get one though.

Thanks again

Joe
