Hello All

This is my first post here, but is by no means my first visit. I often find the knowledgeable folks here have already answered many questions I have had when googling for LNER information, and the forum always seems to be friendly and helpful.

I'm currently creating an illustration of Gresley's A3 pacific, and need a drawing of the 1928 type corridor tender in original condition to work from, as the current drawing I'm using (this one) only has the GN tender.

I was hoping that someone here might know where I can find such a drawing, either online, or a in a book. I'm lucky because, living in Hampshire, I have access to the county libraries railway collection, which contains just about every railway book ever published in this country, so should be able to find any you recommend.

Here is a WIP to give you a taste of what I am working on.

Here, you can use my A1/A3 corridor tender as a basis. I've left the back of the cab on for scaling but you can rip the tender apart as much as you want, changing wheels, handrails, axleboxes etc EDIT: Oh, and welcome to the forums

Would it be possible for you to send me a copy of the drawing for the 1928 corridor tender? I have suitable drawings for the other types I require already.

Could be useful, is it to scale though? I seem to remember reading somewhere that GAs aren't always to scale and are proportioned in such a way to fit all the important information in.

The drawing shows what purports to be a 1928 corridor tender with no fairing at the front end and attached to a loco with a cab to tender sheet affixed. No locomotive ever ran in this condition.

I did actually forget to remove the sheet.

Point of note, until today I have had no resource material whatsoever for liveries and configurations. I picked up Yeadon's vol 2 for a tenner , but vol 1 was snapped up by the customer before me

For those who don't know, vol 1 is the A1 and A3 classes, vol 2 is the A4 and W1 classes

Picking up on this thread, I am not aware, in the public domaine, of a really accurate drawing of the original corridor tender other than that by the late John Edgson (Isinglass) who did use original GAs which in turn are to a large scale and quite clear. Several people have drawn this tender and some are more accurate than others - there is a version in the Finney A1/A3 kits which is as good as you will find.

Personally I find the computer generated illustrations lacking in fine detail and proportion and would much prefer to see a carefully interpreted exterior drawing in the traditional sense.

Computers don't generate drawings. As with any other format such drawings are only as good as the draughtsman.

It all depends where you start! CGI has to start somewhere and I have a number of approaches to get my graphics underway which, apart from releasing the secrets to certain parties, remain classified. It might be added that a good knowledge of the subject using both photographs and models before one even starts with the mouse is essential.

The one advantage of CGI is that the drawings are easily amended and corrected and improved.

I had a brainwave this morning and - after digging out a big, dusty, pile of old books from under the junk on top of my wardrobe - I found this:



It's from an old magazine entitled "History of Railways", possibly from issue 1, but I can't be sure as when it was given to me it had already be bound without its covers.

What are your opinions on this drawing's accuracy?
