Self powered with a petrol engine, I believe? It's in one of the North Eastern Record volumes.

I'll take the opportunity of using this thread to post a picture of my own.

It was taken in the very late 50s/early 60s at the bottom of our garden. The shot was taken north of Cottingham and the train is heading for Hull.

I think that the saloon may have been the one that spent most of its life sitting at the end of platform 1 at Paragon and that it was probably the Hull district Engineer's conveyance.

Any information about the carriage will be most welcome. Sorry about the poor quality and the fact that the carriage is not the main subject of the shot.

Modelling would be fun. What wheelbases are SPUDs done in?

Try Autocar they may have come across some in the NRM when researching the Autocar.

SPUD's come in 24.5, 28.7, 31 and 35mm wheelbases, with a mix of either spoked or disc wheels.

For reliability I'd go for Black Beetle, or cut the top off of the SPUD to allow air to circulate around the motor properly.

Would look a lovely little machine in any scale, and for some preserved railways, the eight passenger capacity is all they'd need for a staff runabout.

I am pretty sure I came across a drawing for one of these at the NRM whilst reserching the autocar, I certainly remember finding drawings for an odd looking beast with a 4w bogie at one end and a single driving axle at the other! Look in the Darlington drawings.
