Name plate background colours ???

Post by Meg Merrilies »

Can anyone help with furnishing information as to the nameplate background colours of some Scottish Gresley and Peppercorn pacifics for the period from mid/late 1950s to the early 60s ?

I'd like to know which of the following Haymarket locos had either red or blue nameplate backgrounds ~~~

60009 Union of South Africa; #24 Kingfisher; #27 Merlin & #31 Golden Plover:

60529 Pearl Diver; 534 Irish Elegance & 537 Bachelors Button:

60152 Holyrood; 159 Bonnie Dundee; 160 Auld Reekie; 161 North British & 162 Saint Johnstoun:

THANKS ~ from me . . . . . and my collection of 64b locos [no - I don't have all of the above -- yet]
There ain't no cure for nostalgia!

IIRC from my hazy recollections of watching the Lizzie through Wood Green 58-61.9,27,31 were red and 24 was blue.

Never saw the others down here!

60009 should be black backed for that period.

Good evening....my very 1st post on any such forum
I'm keen to know if anyone has evidence of Kingfisher having a blue backed nameplate. I've only seen red or black.
Also I heard a rumour in the 60s that Irish Elegance had an emerald GREEN backed nameplate. Was that true or just schoolboy ribbing?

No local knowledge of Kingfisher or any other than Blue Peter with blue. Irish Elegance did indeed carry green plates at one point. And Bahram had a brown background.

60031 Golden Plover had a Light Blue background to her nameplates during this period. I have photographic proof.

thanks Del
I have seen 60031 photos with blue background also but its old 60024 I'm seeking. Interesting to hear of Bahram's brown coloured plates; does anyone know why that should be?

Two things slightly of track , I remember seeing 60012 with blue name plates on a works visit to Doncaster c1961.
An old painter/sign writer (mainly on steam rollers and traction engines) once told me the background name plate colour should follow what ever the main colour used on lining out the engine.
