A3 WORKS PLATE PLACEMENT.

Post by MERLIN60027 »

I have a question regarding the A3 German smoke deflector fitted locomotives.
Is there a correct placement for The Works plate, Are they on the Deflector, The Name plate splasher, or The Cab side? Regards.

A quick look through various sources, seems to indicate the works plates were moved to the cab side below the number. This had happened with 'Humorist' when it was fitted with large smoke deflectors.

However, it would appear many examples were running without works plates by this time, so photographic evidence would be required for an individual loco.

Thanks, John. It would appear that the works plate was in some cases never refitted after the fitting of deflectors. My own reference shows this & in some cases its hard to tell if they are on the cab side.
Colour photos would of course show in more detail. Think i will fix them on the cabside.Regards.

The contractor built engines did not have a works plate on the smokebox. These were remove at the first heavy repair and a small ownership plate put on the middle splasher.
