Hello All,
Can anybody out there tell me about what date did BR change from the "Cycling Lion" to the "Ferret and Dartboard" tender emblem?
Thanks in advance,
Trevor, Bellingham Washington, USA

Thanks. My layout is based on Whitby West Cliff in 1956, so my locos can have both emblems.
Prosperous 2012 to all.

The change took several years for the locomotive stock.
Most express types were completed over later 1956 to 1958. I would suggest few in 1956 itself.
I suggest for frequently photographed express types a dated photograph should be possible. There are excellent books by the RCTS and W B Yeadon which should be consulted. True of a lot of queries on this forum!
The more humble types took much longer.

D3052 was reported to have lasted until withdrawal in 1973 with the pre-56 emblem, although that is of little use to a Whitby layout, as it was a Willesden shunting loco (sorry).

Ay up!
Again, not much use to a Whitby layout but 41241 was withdrawn in 1967 still with the old crest.

And this sort of delay was not confined to BR days. We think 3171, the sister autocar to the one we're restoring, was never painted into LNER colours, despite not being withdrawn until 1930.

Getting further away from the Yorkshire coast, wasn't there supposed to be a pannier tank in the early 1960s still with GWR on the sides? (and I don't mean the preserved ones).

Yes, I've a photo in one of my books, although I cannot remember which one!!
There was also a Manor running around with the tender in GW livery until 1965ish

Malton-50F-had an allocation of this class of loco so could they have found their way into Whitby?

The last photo in 'LNER Locomotives in Colour 1936-1948' by Ron White and Norman Johnston is of a rather scruffy J69 no. 8568 still in LNER livery in November 1954. It was the last loco in LNER livery and was finally repainted in April 1956! It was withdrawn in 1958.
