Another old photo I came across showing her in a rather bashed state. Anyone know the background and did this result in her withdrawal.

Cripes! I thought it was just H.A. Ivatt that was withdrawn from service following a collision. It looks as if it has suffered worse frame damage at the front end than no.60123 as well.

Could anyone point me towards some information about this crash please?
My google search didn't bring anything useful up.

Yikes! Never thought this could happen! I'm just as surprised that no one's mentioned of this 'til now.

Info from the A1 trust website:
"No. 60120 was withdrawn due to damage sustained in a collison with the rear of an up freight train stopped for examination at North Otterington (Nr Northallerton) on the ECML in the early hours of 16th January,1964. The A1 was running south light engine at the time."

Judging by the way the buffer beam has moved, the loco must have hit the back of the goods train at quite a speed.
I hope the guard in the brake van escaped.

G'Day Gents
Thats a new one on me, and as other posters have said running at a fast pace, would also say that the goods train was heavily laden, boy that's had a thump !

Yikes! I wonder how the crew of Kittiwake fared in that one. No seat belts in an A1 cab.

Thanks. Don't remember that at all. Remember H A IVATT's demise OK.

I was hoping to be able to help by pointing you at :-
http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/index.php
But for some reason I can't find a record of this incident in what is otherwise a most comprehensive archive..... strange
