An old photo I discovered when clearing out of Miles Beevor with Duke of Gloucester surprisingly at Crewe Works. The Duke fared better!

Excuse my ignorance Blackout, but where did the driving wheels end up? Was it under "Sir Nigel Gresley" by any chance?
If yes, then it solves a minor mystery for me. When I was researching 60010 at the Exporail archives, I scribbled this note down, which when I came to read it months later I didn't quiet understand..
I wrote....." J P Heald(?)-SNG-Miles B-Parts- superheated elements, coupled wheels, balance weights fractured"......
Cheers,
Owd Sweedy.

Much of the motion on SNG is stamped '26' or '60026', but I don't think I ever noticed such marking on the drivers. Not that it would usually be terribly visible.

I have seen this shot before, i believe that Crewe were overhauling 60007(?) & used Miles Beevor as a source of parts.

I'm not sure if the full set of six drivers were used, but 60007 definitely got at least three of em.

It’s a sad image for me and besides being a success or not, they both ended up on the same scrap line.

Ay up!
Let's look on the bright side. Thanks to a number of folk who don't know the meaning of the word "impossible", we do at least still have the Duke!
71000 sounds like a "40" in the distance - wonderful machine!

I believe the duke was initially taken to the wrong scrapyard

Remember seeing the Duke at Barry back in the mid 70s.
It was minus its cylinders which had been salvaged for the Science Museum I believe.

Yup, 71000 was sent to Cashmore's who'd already started stripping it prior to cutting when a photoggy, or so I am lead to believe, noticed that the label was for Barry. She was re-delivered to Barry instead, hence her survival.
As to why the streak didn't get there - weight restrictions, loading gauge restrictions, unfitness to travel far, who knows?
