A4 query
Hello,
many thanks for allowing me to join the group. My query regards the A4 Sir Ronald Matthews, which I m in the process of modelling in 1950/60 BR Green Livery. Did the loco carry oval works plates on the cabside? From the very few pics I have been able to get of this camera-shy loco, it doesn't look like it; although they are not the clearest of photos. Many thanks for any help.

I picked up Yeadons and I see what you mean!
Pages 62-63 have six pictures of 4500/60001 Garganey/Sir Ronald Matthews.
Three are LNER era, and one (dated 1938) shows an oval works plate on the cabside. Unfortunately lighting, dirt, and oblique views do not not help with most of the other pictures.
The latest picture - closest to your era is dated 1948. This is a less oblique view and a bit dirty but it looks like it might still be an oval plate.
Changes you might be interested in:
22-25/3/39 Paint touch up and new nameplates (name change)
27/10-7/12/41 Side skirt removed
24/9-29/10/43 Converted to 75% cutoff
30/12/53-5/2/54 Long guard irons removed
3/3-11/4/58 Double chimney fitted
13/12/58-9/1/59 AWS fitted
31/7-5/10/61 Speed indicator fitted.

The only pictures I've been able to find of 60001 are in Gavin Morrison's "Glory Days - the Gresley A4s", which contains three pictures of this engine. Two of them are outside the timeframe you mention but none (including one taken in 1939) shows a builder's plate on the cabside.
So - did anyone dare tell Stephenson, "It's not Rocket science"?

Wasn't Sir Ronald Matthews the runt of the litter? During the late 50s, it was rarely let out on express passenger trains due to frequent failures, and so they never cleaned it, hence the lack of photos. When it reached its due milage for shopping, I think that the frames were found to be bent or something similar. Have I got the right loco?

Wern't some inside the cab, I noticed Unions last week in there for the first time?
On that, Locomotives In Detail Vol 3 A4 Class has one photo, which is too far away/dirty!
But The Book of the A4 Pacifics Photographic Accompanion 1 (very nice books these 2) shows Gannet 4500 with no plate Aug 12th 1939 and non May 11th 1957
Book 2 shows no plate 1958/59 and non in Sept 1959
see what is ment by rarley photgraphed as these 4 pics are the only ones in these 2 books!
And looking at Yeadons, it does have it in LNER in 1938, but then it looks as if it has gone/not yet added in the next 1938 picture, then all the rest it isn't there.
Looking at this picture on ebay, it doesn't, and must be in the cab!
