Operational Locos around Beverley and Hornsea c1960

Hi everyone, I'm new here but have always been interested in the railway and work as a structures examiner on the LNW so hopefully you can forgive my abrupt request for information!

I'm thinking of buying my Dad an N-Gauge locomotive for Christmas and would ideally like to get the class which pulled him to school in the late 1950s and early 1960s. I know he lived around Beverley and Hornsea at the time and went to a public school but don't know what would have been operational around that time.

If anyone has any clues or knows where I could research this information it would be a great help. Thank-you!

I am guessing then that he went to Hymers College, which was just round the corner from Botanic Gardens station. This was served, until 1964, by trains from both Hornsea, and Withernsea, so if he cam into Hull from hornsea he could have got off at BG and walked round the corner, which was no more than 5 mins walk from the station.
If he came from Beverley, then he would go into Paragon station on a Bridlington/Scarborough service, but I think it's doubtful he would change trains, to go out to BG. More than likely he would go and catch a bus just outside the ABC Cinema (as I did from 1965 - 1970!), which was next door to Paragon station.
With regards to the sort of loco that hauled those trains, I will leave for others to comment, but from the late 50's onwards, it would more than likely be DMU's.

Kevin is right about DMUs dominating passenger traffic from the late 50s especially on the Hornsea/Withernsea lines but not all were so.

A fair number of trains through Beverley, which originated at York or Scarborough, were still steam hauled. This was because these trains often had vans attached.

There would have been D49s, possibly B16s and more often than not B1s. Whilst Rob's father would not have caught the York train which departed from Paragon about 8:00am, it often provided interesting motive power - foreign B1s, Black 5s, Crabs and the odd Jubilee.

There was a short Cinderella period in January 1963 - many DMUs based at Botanic Gardens suffered from cracked cylinder blocks from the exceptionally cold weather and V1/V3s were to be seen on the Hull-Cottingham-Beverley service long since turned over to DMUs. I don't know if the Hornsea and Withernsea trains reverted to steam at this time.

Another confirmation !Is there another Hymerian out there ? The (largely) Craven units took over Hornsea, Withernsea and Beverley short distance in about1956/7,the Hull D49s were thin on the ground by 1960,most other distance passenger traffic after that was in the hands of B1s,B16 (which replaced the D49s) ,sometimes K3s, The V1/3s were still around until early 1963,largely I think,for the Brough factory rush hour and some station pilot work- although were seen sometimes on the Yorkshire Pullman. A regular late 1950s D49 working to Paragon over Walton St about 8.30 am was often Banffshire-this would be about right for your dads train from Beverley direction.She was withdrawn in1961.As far as I know no rtr D49 is made in N so your best bet for a ready to run N gauge would be a B1.

Wow thanks for the help guys. I'll find out which school my Dad went to over Christmas and post back with the actual engines that carried him. I found a good value B1 (which happened to be one I was eyeing up anyway) in green so fingers crossed he'll make the connection!
