Situated at Beamish open air museum on the 1913 Town's Railway line, near the end of the line as it goes behind the town and rounds the corner, is this 1902 built bogie stores van, it's original number was 5523, it's present number DE 903001, according to it's entry on the Vintage Carriage Trust's superb Wagon Survey - http://www.ws.vintagecarriagestrust.org ... sp?Ref=103

What a shame that it has come to this. There were two vans, Nos 2 and 5523 built to Diagram H2 in July 1902. I saw and photographed DE903001 in a siding on the Darlington to Barnard Castle line at Winston station in August 1966. My memory is not what it was, but I think its sister was also there but I did not photgraph it. Are there any plans to preserve the vehicle, or will it just rot away?
How odd - In October 2009 this van was most definitely stored undercover and was scheduled for restoration - I was generously allowed access to it to measure and photograph it for a modelling project - all photos had to be close up as the shed area was quite cramped. Does this post mean it has gone back outside? if so it is a backward step, as its surviving near relative was moved from Shildon to the NYMR for restoration. During its time stored outside it has already suffered some fire damage to the outside of one end.
The bogie store van has been there certainly since April, and possibly was there in January. I believe it's owned by the LCLT who are also looking after the J21 65033

I would not say that this vehicle has been restored but it has had a coat of paint and is now displayed on the isolated siding in Pickering station. In use as a station group store.
I did post some photos of it when it arrived at the NYMR. Can't remember the thread title though.

These vans worked in pairs. one had tanks in for parafin which was piped into the office located in the other van so it could be measured. These therefor are the pair, it would be nice if they could be reunited together although i beleive a couple of each type were built so whether these two were ever coupled together is anybodies guess. the one at Beamish is the one with the storemans office.
Which chucklehead has tried to convert that signal into a Distant by cutting a notch out of the end? It used to be at Bedale and it deserves a better fate than this..
