Can anyone idenify this oldy?

Ive been discussing this one with 52A and note there is an armorial device of a crown on the tender. This led me to wonder if it was a mainline loco sold out of service to a pit or Harbour company. It may be even an export loco.
Can anyone suggest a company that used a crown as a trademark and was rail served.
Does anyone have a pic of Newcastle and Carlisle No.11 or later NER No.460 which was my first thought.
Come on gents you know you want to solve this one.

EDIT;- Just noted smokebox wing plates an embellishment usually found on locos north of the Border.
EDIT2;- Noted crown on smokebox, at one time NER crews did add unofficial Embellishments so i wonder if this is indeed N&C No.11 NEWCASTLE.

Skinningrove wouldn't be a possibility would it?

What significance is the crown?

the cab looks very ne/s&d
wonder whether it was a cast off that was sent to one of the coal mines around newcastle, the outside frames look hawthorn like, rather than stephenson, but the cab certainly is reminiscent of s&d loco.
number suggests is was part of a small railway, even a dock engine.
cannot find it in hoole though

My first book checked was Hoole, I regret i dont have a Maclean but looking through www.steaminfo a possible candidate was found in the NER constituents as mentioned earlier the N&C No11 NEWCASTLE later NER No.460.

my copy of maclean is modern reprint, and at this time, i cannot find it

however, seem to think this might relate to the port clarence railway around middlesborough, although the other ideas work too

It's from one of the pit railways in Durham, such as Lambton or Londonderry. Hence the ducal crown. Both these lines had their own locos built. If you look at the buffers it's likely that this loco was not intended for much normal main line use. There is an article in an old HMRS journal about these railways, I try an find it today and see if anything like this is in it.

The cab has a similar look to the S&D "Long Boiler" in the National Collection.

Didn't the Duke of Northumberland have his own railway for hauling minerals extracted from mines on his patch? Or am I thinking of somewhere else?

I'm going to agree with almost everyone else that it has a strong NER/S&D look - Fletcher era (if not Fletcher himself). The fittings bear similarities to Fletcher and Bouch locos. Even the tender looks like it has the two tone green lined livery?

So my guess is it is an ex NER/S&D loco that has been sold into private ownership (or was built as a 'copy' of an NER loco, as often happened with local wagon fleets). I think the 'crown' device on the tender, is the key.

If you look carefully, you will see the crown motif is on the smokebox door too.

The coronet device is indicative of the Londonderry Railway and im on at this moment trying to find out about No.11.

Just a thought after the mention of pits and harbours.
I do know that there was at least 1 tender loco and also some ex mainline locos including a southern type.

At the moment info is pointing to Seaham Harbour locos CLIO or AJAX. anyone got a pic to compare cant seem to find any on line.
