Hi
Can anyone help me I am trying to track down information on a plate with the reference of 90709. What does this mean as I am told that it relates to a smoke box number?
I know that this may be a simple request but some info on what it was, where it worked etc would be useful.

90709 itself was built at Vulcan Foundry and entered traffic in Feb 1945 as War Dept No 79271. It was bought by British Railways in Dec 1948 but wasn't renumbered as 90709 until May 1950. It was withdrawn in Apr 1966 and cut up the following Oct. In 1948 it was based at Mexborough shed, between Doncaster and Sheffield, but by 1955 it was at Plaistow, East London. It wouldn't have stayed there, but I don't know where else it went.
Someone else will have to tell you the names of the engine drivers.

Thats an interesting snippet, a WD sheded at Plaistow
Didn't think many would have been seen in that area, although the East London docks were close by, and so was Tilbury. Thanks

Yes, it is surprising. Don't know off-hand how many were based there, but it wouldn't have been for long. Plaistow didn't cover the docks - that was Stratford and Devons Road. Tilbury also had a few WDs for a time, if I remember right.

I will have to be a bit quicker to beat you guys, just wanted to Add that this loco was not one of the ones bought by the LNER and classed O7.

Actually Plaistow didn't do bad for Austerities
they had 90093,90106,90196,90244,90256,90442,90443,90514,90526,90653,90668,90709.
Tilbury did as well,
90023,90034,90093,90106,90196,90244,90256,90298,90442,90494,90501,90514,90522,90653.
So I would imagine seeing one around that area would be pretty good.
By the way I used to own a 7.1/4 gauge Austerity and when I bought it it was 70904.
I altered it to L.N.E.R. 3031 as that was the number series they had when I first joined the L.N.E.R 3000 - 3199.
We used to get them often on the Darnall - Annersley run which you may or may not know started the same time as the Annersley Runners.
Trains which in the past had taken anything up to 8 hours to get there now did it in less than 2.
Then when we worked back again we could sign off, somtimes with less than 5 hours in and get a full days pay.
Darnall worked all the Darnall to Annersley goods the Annersley men worked them southwards.
