Hi all

I've been looking into this particular York pacific. Would I be right in thinking her tender was pretty much an A3 Non corridor tender beaded, with no streamline front to it unlike her later sisters.

Have found a picture of her in apple green and this appears to be the case, but I'm more interested in the early 50s.

Sort of answers my question, so thats clear then.....she had a A3 tender pretty much...no streamlining.

Was 60501 the same?

That's a sorry sight tis just a shame Thompson's excuse to rebuild the P2's was easily backed up...

All depends on opinions really...I don't mind the Thompson pacifics, quite partial to them. they may be un gainly, even ugly...but that sheer length and size must have been mightly impressive if one was watching one move around the yard at York!

Having already painted a lot of Gresley non-streamlined Pacifics, I remember how much more impressive the pre-production models of Thompson Pacifics looked when they arrived here from Bill Stott (NuCast) for painting. The 'wow' factor (which they undoubtedly have) and the fact that they were part and parcel of the East Coast mainline is surely what we modellers should be thinking about, not the politics or mechanical unworthiness of the real engines.

Producing limited coach runs is my business albeit in a small way but in the advent of a small lottery win, I would commision a run of A2-2 'Cock 'O the North's and watch the rush to buy....

If your modelling the ECML you have to have Thompson pacifics...granted you could avoid the A2/1s there only being the 1 on the Eastern Region, but with all 6 A2/2s being in England, and especially there being 15 A2/3s!

As I say, I would give my right hand to have been born 50 years earlier and to have seen Lord President and Earl Marischal grandly strutting about 50A

Impressive in the yard? Dunno. But lets face it ANY engine's impressive thrashing past at speed!

I've said it before and I'll say it again. It is strange how the rearward-set cylinders make the drivers look smaller.

It certainly is a matter of opinion but in the ugly stakes the rebuild is one of them.

For me its a bit like driving a Ferrari Daytona into the Doncaster workshop and coming out on ten days later with a Trabant. My reaction being, "your not bleeding serious gov"

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, remember. The Q1s may be dog ugly but they were built to do a job and had no extras at all.

Just to follow up regarding the possibility of an A3 tender with an A2/2 - is this tender suitable for one of the A2/2s in the 1950s?

It's a spare Hornby A3 tender I picked up somewhere, I forget where:



Interesting possibility if it is, I could in theory buy an A2 to convert to A2/2, modify and use the Hornby tender, and be left with a spare A2 tender for another project...!

Even though you'd sell more if they were Mikado's painted in Doncaster Green?
