NER J-21 65098

Morning all. I'm looking for pictures of 65098 as reference material for a 4mm model using the London Road Models kit. I've chosen this as a suitable candidate for my proposed layout since it remained a Darlington engine all its working life going to the scrapman with many similar engines from Kirkby Stephen and West Auckland in 1954. I've found some pics in Yeadon and in Chapman's Railway Memories 17, however google has thrown up references to ebay sales in the last 3 years showing evidence of the loco on the Darlington and Barnard Castle branch (a bonus as my chosen location is Broomielaw on this branch). Any material or pointers would be most welcome and appreciated.

Cheers all
Steve

There are two good photos of 5098 in Yeadon's register Vol 47A pages 44 and 64. both are photograghed at Darlington shed in almost the same spot. The first is late LNER and the second early BR numbered 65098 and lettered "BRITISH RAILWAYS". The down side is that they are both from the same side and angle.

Hi Arthur, thanks for replying and reeminding me to look closer at those pics. I'm now fairly certain about a lot of details for this engine and now have to fabricate an extended smokebox wrapper to accomodate the superheater since that option isn't included in the kit.
<flattery> incidentally its caused me to look seriously at your j24 kit which has sat intimidating me since i got it and having looked now with a more experienced eye I have to say wow, even I feel like i could assemble it its so clearly laid out. Btw is it possible to get a set of fittings and your csb plot (I undertand you may have revised things such as the tender to accomodate csb). I have been left wishing you'd do J-25 and make the cosmetic spring plates separately available too.</flattery>

cheers

Speaking from memory your J24 comes with two smokeboxes saturated and superheated. You could always keep the saturated one for the J24 and use the other on the J21! The J21 boiler was pitched 1" higher than that of the J24 but that is only the thickness of the twelve thou etch. I may even have some J24 bits lying around somewhere if the test builds were for the saturated version.

The castings for the J24 are available in a mixture of lost wax and white metal. Price is £25 and includes the tender castings. Also included is a fold-up fireshield and lost wax firedoor. as well as boiler bands, various cab handwheels and assorted washers. Please add £1.50 for P&P.

I don't have any 3038 gallon tenders with CSB but I do have some for the 3940 tender. The length would need to be shortened but the wheel spacing etc. is identical. I have a few of these in 18thou brass which are redundant and destined for scrap. The only minor problem is that the well tank on the 3940 gallon tender is longer but that is barely visible. The brake gear on the etch is for the outside compensated pull rods but you will have the other on the original etches

Let me know if you are interested.

Arthur,
thanks for replying again - yes i most definitely am interested in the parts for the tender (have tried very hard not to write "tender parts" just seems a double entendre too many today!) and a set of fittings for the j-24. Can you pm me a total price. I'll have to hold on until payday (too many birthdays this month) but yes please. Oh and thanks for reminding me of the options parts on your frets - I think a saturated j24 (Newport's 65601) may possibly have been "appropriated" by Darlington for the odd freight turn along to Barnard Castle possibly passing a superheated j21 such as 65098 at Broomielaw - well it will in this version of history! Thanks again.

Cheers
