What is happening with the two proposals to build new P2 locos?

The news I have on the subject is that they are going to have the two different noses. The A1 trust is proposing the original style nose as carried by 2001 from new whilst the other will carry the later A4 style streamlined nose. There are supposedly plans for the parts for both to be ordered in batch so it will technically be cheaper to produce the two. The other thing I have heard is that they will use the same design boiler as Tornado and will be ordered along with Tornado's second boiler when they have the money. There are also plans to use as many parts from the design of Tornado as possible, so the P2's will be made around existing parts.

So, batch and standard parts are the words of the decade for the P2's and Tornado.

Oh, and both will have Kylchap double blastpipes, evidently for coal economy. Bear in mind this info is about half a year old, so someone may be able to advance on it.

A thought struck me today. Would a simpler alternative to recreating the P2 be to re-create the W1 (in rebuilt form)??

I also understand that the name "Pegasus" was considered (and plates cast??) but not proceeded with.

"British Enterprise" was another one.

Personally, I'd prefer to see a "Rebuilt" W1 over a P2, but that's just my twisted opinion. If a P2 must be done, an A4 front would be better, in my view, for efficiency. If only they had skirted sides, too.

The A1 Trust specifically choose the original front as they thought the later version looked too similar to an A4 - a problem that applies even more so to the rebuilt W1, and for this reason a replica W1 seems highly unlikely. A pity, as I'm sure it would have been an early restoration choice had it made its way to Woodhams.
