B16s and other LNER locos between Ilkley and Skipton
Evening all, I realize I've not been around for a bit
I have seen numerous pictures of B16s around the Ilkley area, and on route to Skipton in the 1950's era.... my question is, B16s in this area...where would they be from, Neville Hill?
Also what other exLNER locos worked through this way, pics of J39s seem quite common too
Cheers

By 1950 the B16's were shared between York(which I think had all the 'rebuilds' among its allocation) and Neville Hill.

Mirfield (of all places) ended up with a few of them in the late '50s. Initally Raven originals then rebuilds.
Gave the place an unusual air.

Where there any in the Harrogate area?
If so they may well have worked to Skipton via Arthington - Otley - Ilkley.

Two B16's were based at Starbeck(Harrogate)-61442(jun53 to may55) and 61478(may55 to jun59).Post 1950 a few others spent time at Heaton,Mirfield,Hull Dairycoates,Blaydon,Selby and Scarbro. However from 1950 to withdrawel the vast majority spent their time at York and Neville Hill.

I remember as a lad at Guiseley in the early 50's that B16's regularly used to work weekend specials from Leeds City to I think the Middlesborough area. These were always Neville Hill engines.
I don't think that they would go via Ilkley though. Probably turn off at Menston Junction to Otley and on to Harrogate.
I've got a soft spot for these engines!
The only other regular LNER locos were the Hunts that used to work the Harrogate to Bradford business trains which I used to catch to get to school in Bradford.

Re: B16s and other LNER locos between Ilkley and Skipton
Hi All
just been perusing Yeadon Vol 17, and the Register records that B16s were concentrated at Neville Hill from 1949 upto 1961, and at Mirfield between 1960 - 1963. Any B16s seen at Ilkley & Skipton would most likely have come from these two locations.
in regards to other LNER locomotives in that neck of the woods, certainly have images of Gresley J39 0-6-0s plying their trade on the line near Embsay, and believe that Worsdell G5s 0-4-4Ts would have operated out of Ilkley at some time in their career.

I think the first B16s I saw were on Neasden shed. They were in the company of assorted B1s from exotic locations in the Far North, like Dairycoates or Neville Hill.

In mid-1955, all B16's were allocated to either York or Neville Hill, except for...
61445 Scarborough (50E), 61474 Selby (50C) and the aforementioned 61478 Starbeck (50D).
Cheers

The web-site of the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Railway has some historical photos as well as more recent preservation era views, http://www.embsayboltonabbeyrailway.org ... togal.html may be of interest.

Thanks for the help everyone.
B16 has to be my favourite pregrouping designed loco...especially the Gresley and Thompson valve gear ones. Shame one never was preserved

Like you Tom i have a soft spot for NER 4-6-0s although i think the earlier ones looked more elegant. I love the look of the B13s.
