OK then -- where do the middle cylinders go?

That is a matter for conjecture. There were several 4-6-0 designs drafted out prior to the arrival of the B17s, unfortunately the drawings have disappeared and one can only go by descriptions remaining.

Here is another food for thought. What if Gresley had not gone to his maker in 1941?
All you have to do to view these word files is to click on them and they should open in another window. The original graphics are to 12mm to the foot and rather large to post so I impose them in a word file.

I had to look twice at that streamliner to see why it wasn't what it appeared to be.

I know I could work it out for myself, but if I'm feeling lazy, do you happen to know what percentage or overall print size is required for the 4-6-0 diagrams to give 4mm scale results?

You should be able to print out in word and the drawings will come out at 4mm scale. If you are having problems I can email you the actual files if you send me a pm with your email address and then you print out at 32% to get 4mm scale. I would add that the 4-6-0s can be printed out on A4 paper but you need A3 for the 4-6-2s.

The thoughts behind the A3s are:

If Thompson had not been around then streamlined pacifics would not have been de regour during hostilities - so an updated A3 with vee front cab would have been a possiblity.

Given the smoke deflecting experiments with Humorist and the success with the later P2s in solving this problem a logical step would have been to graft an A4 front end onto an A3.

Without wishing to be pedantic but wouldn't a banjo dome have been provided??

Following the style of boiler cladding on the P2 I have assumed that the same pattern would be applied to the A3 rebuilt with streamlined front end. As for the vee front cab version, due to the availability of both types of boiler it could have either a dome or banjo 'steam collector'.

Wow these are just fantastic drawings and I love the thread. I’m extremely interested about the streamlining to the A1 design as I was unaware this was mooted. Do you have any more details about the proposal? I’m sorry but I feel that my curiosity about LNER is reaching pest proportions for this Forum’s patience.

There were various proposals drawn up for streamlining the A1 but the plan was scotched with the impending nationalisation of the railways. If anybody wants the full set of proposals, PM me and I will email them the drawings in a word file.
