Relegated to local duties, she leaves Glasgow's St Enoch station in August 1964 with the afternoon stopper to Carlisle via Kilmarnock and Dumfries.

Always a shame to see such a proud machine brought to such a run-down state.

Still, despite the dirt, she at least seems fairly steam-tight.
If I ain't here, I'm in Bilston, scoffing decent chips at last!!!!

This lovely action photograph reminds me of the railway that I knew so well. 60131 was only about 15 years old at the time of the photograph. Fortunately for us, photographs like this one remind us of those days that are now so long ago.

I only ever had one ride on an A 1, and that was about 50 years ago between York and Darlington when I was travelling on duty and had an engine pass in my possession. I remember that the riding quality of this locomotive was excellent, especially for me because I was much more familiar with the harsh riding of Jubilees, Scots, Black 5's, Britannia's and 9 F's. We are all fortunate that the new A 1 has been built so that those of us who were not alive when the A 1's were running can see one today, and a few lucky individuals can have a ride on an A 1 now.
