Re: More problems for Flying Scotsman
Weren't the A3 frames replaced frequently when in BR service due to being crack prone?
Makes one wonder how long a frame set would last before it would crack in service.
Hope 4472's issues get handled as quick and carefully as possible.

What a shame. I am amazed that these cracks were not found during what should have been a most thorough overhaul.
I have heard that A4 no 7 has been sidelined with significant firebox problems; not a good year for LNER Pacifics.

Superb bit of film here:

Flying Scotsman in happier days.
Somewhere on the platform at Berwick there was an incredibly ugly young boy about to celebrate his 13th birthday the following day, I remember it well!

Hi
What a wonderful bit of film. Ihad the pleasure of working with the second driver Big Harry Heron. He was a larger than life character who didnt suffer fools gladly. He always reminded me of Desperate Dan. Happy memories.

Seems the video is UK only. Shame.

According to the RCTS Green Guide vol 2 frame replacement/repair was a standard feature of an A1/A3 overhaul from the 30's on, the last replacements being in about 1960. (The book's more exact, I just haven't got it with me). A3's were habitually reassembled on repaired frames taken out of stock, and their own frames would either be repaired or have a new 3/4 front welded on and put into stock.
I suspect once the procedure was established it was pretty straightforward and economical given the size of the fleet, and anyway I believe the frames couldn't be strengthened further without exceeding weight limits. It may be another reason why Thompson was so keen to change the front end layout, however, not that his was any better.
One feels that some research into the maintenance of A3's should have been done by the NRM before getting stuck into this - it would appear that it would be surprising if it didn't have cracks.
