I think you'll have to specify the number of the mystery loco you mean. That link throws up, as the default image, the clearly identified image of an E4 (T26) at Stratford.....

One or two of the locations look suspect to me.

Number 89 at Clapham Junction under overhead wires.
That looks suspect to me.

Number 89 at Clapham Junction under overhead wires.
That looks suspect to me.
There was overhead at Clapham Junction between 1911, when the LB&SC electrified the service from Victoria to Crystal Palace, and 1929. The LB&SC electrification was at 6.7kv ac overhead since they were looking at main line electification from the start. Unfortunately post grouping the SR was not as forward thinking and preferred the LSWR third rail system so the LB&SC lines were converted in 1928/29 (a pity since Network Rail have recently admitted that the Southern third rail electrification has no future).

It looks like Clapham Junct to me and no 20 is definitely Clapham Junct, overhead wires and all. But the picture after no 89 (pic 22) can't be Clapham J. More like Brighton, perhaps, though I'm not sure.
I'm also wondering about pic 8, ostensibly Stratford shed. It's possibly the turntable at the extreme western end of the yard, looking south, but I'm not sure about the building behind. Maybe I should give it the ok provided the object just off-camera on the right is a light and not a roof.

From Locomotives at the Grouping 2, Casserley and Johnson:
42 (3042) is a D2
388 (7388) is a J69
76 (7076) s an F4
594 (3594) is a J6
768 is a G1 (see Bill's post below), but there was no loco of that number in 1923.
... then you've got a few already...
9312 is a D31
The Colne Valley & Halstead loco I don't know - the book doesn't list any 0-4-0s taken over from that railway, only an 0-4-2 which was withdrawn almost at once.
The GN locos outside York shed look to me like a D2, C2, C1 and I'm not sure about the last one - is the number clearer on the print you've got?
The last one looks like a Gresley K1 which were rebuilt to K2 after the Grouping.

768 is a LNER G1
3885 is a Midland 4F
9312 is LNER D31, NBR M class. All the stock seems to be NER.
The 0-4-0 is not ex Colne Valley, but GER 209 class, LNER Y4. This loco is probably either 209 or 228 which were withdrawn in 1926/7

Thanks, Bill. That still means there's an error either in Casserley/Johnston's book or the date of the photo as they show no loco of that number in service by 1923.

768 was withdrawn before the grouping, but it may not have been cut up until much later.

Fair comment, Bill, but the photo has something of the 'on shed' rather than dumped about it. I'd also have thought (but remain open to being disproved) that 7 months or more after being withdrawn it would have been on the Plant scrap line rather than on a running shed.
I'd be more inclined to suspect the book was wrong, or the photo wrongly dated.

I query the date of 17/5/24 for R24R No.388. The loco had lost its GER cast brass plate by 2/4/24 when it was renumbered and returned to traffic following a general exam.

The pic of the Ivatt locos at York is the best i can get, the original print is in a terrible state
