60024 Kingfisher

One of my most vivid childhood memories in the early 60's (maybe '63 or '64) is of standing a few feet away from 60024 while it stood waiting for the signal before going on to Darlington shed. I looked at the driver (presumably a Scotsman) and he looked at me but I was too timid to say anything but I recall the engine was clean and green which was not a common sight to me in those days.

I assume it had been to Darlington Works for some reason but can anyone please narrow down when this happened and why it was in Darlington.

Thanks in advance.

60024 was in Darlington Works between April and September 1964 for an Intermediate overhaul. After Doncaster ceased dealing with steam in 1963, Darlington assumed responsibility for LNER pacific classes.

So, presuming you saw it ex-works, you would have seen it in early September 1964.

Thanks for that Andy, just what I needed to know!
