Reused Carriage Underframe

Post by Dave »

Whilst at the NRM yesterday I came accross drawing 17003N which shows a Thompson Open 3rd built on a existing underframe from carriage 43628, which was a dia 186 Open 3rd built in 1934. Harris's book says it was written off Goole 1941, does anyone know what happened to it, and were there any other reused underframes used under Thompsons.

Most of the corridor Thompsons (with the notable exception of Dia 328 Corridor Compos), were built with 63' bodies (on 61' 6" underframes).
The rebuild of the burnt out Dia 186 Gresley Open Third to Thompson Dia 337 'special' was possibly a one off to use a perfectly servicable underframe.
In addition to this there was also a Dia 336 Corridor Third with a few examples built in 1946 and 1947 which used the standard pre-war 60' underframe. These were still listed as having 7 compartments and seating 42 in total and were perhaps built with external doors at the ends in more traditional style (compared to the 63' Dia 329 corridor third like 1623 under restoration at Pickering). Again these were possibly built on spare underframes that had already been constructed pre-war fro Gresley stock but never used - one can only speculate on this. It does seem odd to build a none standard length underframe for a small batch of coaches.

Thank you for that info. It's amazing the stuff you come across when going through the NRM rolls.

As an aside to this topic.
Found this on the Embsay website

Besides the news of 6619 the paragraph dealing with the arrival from the NYMR of the Thompson BZ and the proposed work makes interesting reading.
Just wondering if there is a precedent for this?
Also how will it be achieved?
Maybe Simon can enlighten us?
